The Inspiration Behind Grace
Long before Johnson & Co. existed, there was a little girl with sensitive skin—and a young mother trying desperately to figure out how to help her.
I became a mother young, at 19, and welcomed my daughter when I was 24. She arrived as the sweetest, fuzzy little nine-pound baby. It didn't take long, however, for me to realize that her skin seemed to experience the world differently.
She was sensitive to different materials, soaps, plastics, and eventually certain medications. By the time she was two, we were dealing with red, dry, irritated skin and the beginning stages of eczema.
Like most mothers, I wanted to fix it.
I spent countless hours reading about sensitive skin, eczema, ingredients, and more holistic approaches to caring for the body. But I was also a young mother without a lot of money or knowledge about where to begin.
At the time, oatmeal baths and sensitive-skin lotions were some of the better options available to us—and they were expensive. I bought them when I could. The rest of the time, we relied on simple care at home: cool baths, fragrance-free and dye-free products, and sometimes no soap at all.
Learning Her Skin
As my daughter grew, so did our understanding of her sensitivities.
Eventually, we learned she had allergies to tree nuts and milk. That knowledge helped us begin identifying what was—and wasn't—safe for her.
Even something as ordinary as a body scrub required reading every ingredient. She loves body scrubs, but many contain ingredients derived from nuts, including walnut or macadamia. Unfortunately, that was something she learned the hard way.
By her teenage years, eczema flare-ups on her hands and feet had become more frequent. Prescription treatments and fragrance-free moisturizers became part of managing those difficult periods under medical guidance.
Along the way, we learned practical habits that made caring for her skin easier: moisturizing promptly after bathing, recognizing her triggers, reducing stress when possible, keeping bedding clean and dust-free, and choosing uncomplicated, fragrance-free products.
And perhaps most importantly, we learned to read the label.
That lesson stayed with me.
Why We Created Grace
Years later, when my husband and I began Johnson & Co. Artisan Home & Body Goods, we knew we wanted simplicity to be at the center of what we made.
We were tired of unnecessarily complicated products.
Artificial colors. Overpowering fragrances. Excessive packaging. Ingredients added simply to make something brighter, stronger-smelling, or more marketable.
We wanted something different.
Not because we're trying to recreate another century or pretend modern life doesn't have its benefits. We simply believe there is something valuable about returning to a more intentional way of making things:
Simple ingredients. Thoughtful craftsmanship. Products made by human hands.
That philosophy became especially important when I began developing Grace.
Grace was inspired by my daughter and all those years spent searching for gentle, uncomplicated products for her sensitive skin.
It is intentionally simple.
Goat milk.
Oatmeal.
Coconut oil and carefully selected oils and butters.
No added fragrance.
Nothing about Grace is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent eczema or any other medical condition. It isn't a replacement for a dermatologist, medication, or the treatment someone may need.
It is simply our answer to a different question:
Can we make a beautiful, handcrafted soap for people who simply want less?
Less fragrance.
Less unnecessary color.
Less complication.
And more intention.
Our answer was Grace.
More Than the Name of a Soap
The name carries another meaning for me.
Grace has become an important practice in my own life and faith.
Life gets difficult. Plans change. People disappoint us. Sometimes our own thoughts become louder than they should be.
I've learned that I don't have to respond to every difficult moment immediately.
I can breathe.
I can pray.
I can reconsider the way I'm looking at something.
And I can choose grace.
As Christians, we believe God's grace isn't something we manufacture or earn. It is freely given. That truth has changed the way I try to approach my family, my work, and increasingly, myself.
So when it came time to name the soap inspired by the little girl who unknowingly began teaching me about ingredients more than twenty years ago, there really wasn't another name that fit.
Grace.
Simple. Gentle. Intentional.
A bar inspired by a mother's experience, handcrafted with ingredients we carefully chose, and named for something far greater than soap.
His grace is sufficient.
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9
Grace is a handcrafted cleansing soap and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent eczema, allergies, or any other medical condition. Individuals with known allergies or highly sensitive skin should review the full ingredient list and consult their healthcare provider when appropriate.
